Focus on readers needs is a key operating principal that will ensure a loyal following. Blogging just because you like the sound of your own voice/typing, or purely to score well on search engines, may bring in traffic, but the visitors that find your blog will not be satisfied with what is written and quickly turn away.

There is, as you say, a fine balance between writing for SEO and human visitors. I would err on the side of writing for humans and if it is well written then a lot of the SEO elements of a post will naturally come out during the writing.

This is very true - if the content itself isn't good, all the SEO in the world won't help you.
